Commercial cels produced for Dragon Ball Z advertising campaigns are significantly rarer than television-used material, as they were created in far smaller quantities and often discarded after use. ORIOGI is proud to present an intact example from this short-lived Koizumi Desk hanken pipeline.
This one-of-a-kind cel features Super Saiyan Goku depicted upside down in a dynamic, high-energy pose, emphasising diagonal perspective, exaggerated motion, and visual impact-hallmarks of Dragon Ball Z’s 1990s promotional animation language.
The cel was produced as part of a licensed Koizumi Desk commercial and painted within Toei’s animation workflow, adhering to official Dragon Ball Z colour codes and line standards published internally during the era, including the studio colour references used across mid-1990s commercial animation.
Unlike episode production cels, which were photographed sequentially, commercial cels like this were created specifically for advertising animation and visual immediacy. This allowed for bolder compositions, isolated character poses, and more extreme framing, contributing to their scarcity today.
The artwork captures Goku in his classic Super Saiyan design, with sharp linework, saturated colours, and muscular proportions characteristic of Dragon Ball Z’s mid-1990s visual identity-an era closely associated with the rise of key animators such as Naotoshi Shida, whose commercial and promotional work helped define the franchise’s kinetic style beyond television episodes.
