Two original production cels of Vegeta in Super Saiyan form from Episode 161 of Dragon Ball Z, “Super Vegeta Threatens,” first aired in Japan on August 25, 1993 during the height of the Cell Saga. The scene appears approximately 18 minutes into the episode, shortly after Vegeta emerges from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and begins demonstrating the overwhelming increase in power that would define his “Super Vegeta” transformation against Semi-Perfect Cell.
The composition captures Vegeta diving forward engulfed in aura energy, his body driven almost entirely by momentum and aggression. It is one of the defining visual attitudes of the Android and Cell Saga period - Vegeta no longer fighting from desperation or survival, but from overwhelming pride and absolute confidence in his own power. The rigid posture, narrowed expression and explosive forward motion all reflect the characterisation that made the Cell arc version of Vegeta one of the most recognisable iterations in the entire franchise.
The cels preserve Toei Animation’s mid-series Dragon Ball Z visual language at full intensity. Vegeta wears the updated Saiyan armour variant introduced during the Android Saga, featuring the dark blue bodysuit with green shoulder pauldrons and brown torso plating that replaced his earlier Frieza Saga armour design. The dense aura effects, cloudy atmospheric background and aggressive perspective work reflect the period where Dragon Ball Z fully embraced large-scale energy compositions and layered effects animation to match the escalating scale of its battles.
The setup retains both original production cels together with a matching painted background used for display presentation. The cel is additionally marked “A16” in the upper right corner, preserving part of the original internal production notation from Toei Animation’s workflow pipeline. Paint saturation across the aura effects remains exceptionally strong, particularly for a heavily layered Dragon Ball Z action setup from the early 1990s, where dense energy effects frequently resulted in line fading and paint deterioration over time.
Super Saiyan Vegeta cels from the Cell Saga remain among the most sought-after pieces within surviving Dragon Ball Z production material, particularly examples featuring heavy aura animation and aggressive combat staging. Well-preserved effects-heavy setups with intact paint and strong colour retention are considerably scarcer than standard dialogue or static-frame cels from the same production era.
